A few weeks ago my oldest son – Ashton – had surgery. Don’t freak, it wasn’t anything too serious. A simple outpatient procedure. He had a small bump on his chest that had grown and needed to be removed. I was so impressed at how well he did. Maybe it’s because he didn’t realize what was going to happen! He came through like a champ. No reactions to the anesthesia, he never got overly upset, and so far the healing process has gone great.

I was the one who went into the operating room with Ashton. I stayed by his side while they put the tiny gas mask over his face and he faded into sweet dreams. As I watched his eyes close, I felt my heart break for my son. Even though I knew he wasn’t going to feel any pain, it still tore me up inside.

I felt God speak to my heart.

“See how you feel right now? How much you LOVE your son that you can’t even stand seeing him put under the anesthesia? How much MORE do I LOVE YOU that I sent my ONLY son to DIE FOR YOU so that YOU can have ETERNAL LIFE!”

God continues to amaze me in ways I could never imagine.

I hope that you make a special effort this Sunday to come to Fair Oaks Church as we talk about the cross and observe communion.

Disney Scene It

So tonight we introduced our kids to Disney Scene It. Fun family game. Ashton actually did really well while Vinny was less than thrilled about any idea of a board game. One of the questions in the game would describe a Disney Character and then you would have to identify them. For instance...

"Who lives in the hundred acre wood? - Bounces a lot - The most wonderful thing is that he's the only one!"

The answer would be "Tigger".

Well Ashton apparently took a liking to this form of questioning. While in his bath tonight he started asking me....

Ashton: "Hey Daddy. Who likes to play Lego Star Wars and doesn't like to brush his teeth and takes baths"

Me: "You?"

Ashton: "Yea!"

He was making me laugh with some of the questions, but i nearly fell over laughing when he asked this.....

Ashton: "Who likes to be funny with his kids?"

Me: "Daddy?"

Ashton: "Yea!"

Well. Today is the big day. Today we get to see our little bean. It still doesn't feel real. Maybe it will today when we get to see the heartbeat and that black and white fuzz picture of my wife's uterus :-) I'm really anxious to know if this is a boy or a girl. We won't know that until after christmas time though.

Well, looks like we're pulling the old hat trick! That's right, number three is on the way. It still hasn't sank in completely yet. Hard to believe we're going to be a family of 5! Insane. My friends all think i am crazy....and maybe i am, well at least crazy about my kids :-)

I'm sure there be more updates on this as things progress, but here's a nice little conversation i had with Ashton the other day.

I've been on a reading kick lately. Weird. I know. I hate reading. I have this amazing ability where i can read an entire page and have no clue what i just read. I just space out. That has not been the issue with my last few books which is amazing. I recently finished It by Craig Groschel - a great leadership book, especially for church leaders. Along with "It" i finished reading 200 Pomegranates by Shawn Wood. A great encouraging book for anyone who wants to be great at something. Good books, but i'm really looking forward to reading...

One of my best friends goes to a church in NY called True North Community Church. Every time me and the wife are on Long Island for a Sunday we always make a special effort to go to one of their services. I love their Pastor, Bert Crabbe, he is such a cool and Godly man. What i love even more though is the worship experience. Their music always blows me away. Their worship band actually wrote their own worship album. And it is amazing. Seriously. Its my favorite worship album. More so than any Hillsong album or any Jeremy Camp, watermark blah, blah, blah you name it. This one is better. Were beginning to incorporate some of their worship songs in our own services. My friend Sean wrote a few of the songs and produced it as well. Probably the most talented guy i know. Anyways, a few weeks back their church had something very very very awesome happen to them. An anonymous person in their congregation won $3 million in a scratch off lotto ticket and they gave ALL OF IT to the church. The only request of the giver was that they remain anonymous.

Blue Like Jazzle

Well. I've officially finished Blue Like Jazz and all in all it wasn't too bad. I had heard good things about the book before i read it. Not sure i would necessarily recommend it to someone now that i've read it. There were some things i really didn't agree with, but you gotta learn to take in the meat and spit out the bones. The book left me with a feeling that if i were to meet Donald Miller himself i might not like him. I have no idea why. I could be totally wrong and i could be his best friend....but not likely. No doubt Miller is a democrat...which...well...is fine. I actually really enjoyed most of the book...i think it was just that when i found something i didnt agree with..i really didn't agree with it.

Not like my "review" (if you can even call it that) has any value anyways. I read one book every six months it seems and i'm probably the most illiterate person there is. I just felt compelled to give an opinion...instead of just posting a picture of the book and a small caption.

side note: Donald miller replaced Cameron Strang to do the closing prayer at the Democratic National Convention. Cameron Strang is the editor of Relevant Magazine - which if you dont subscribe to...you need to cause its awesome. Strange changed his mind about doing the prayer and backed out on the first night of the convention. I think the young evangelical "fascination" with Obama may be slowing down. check out the whole article here

So yesterday we had plans of driving from Virginia to Boston (or right outside it) to where our hotel was. I was expecting an approximate 8 - 9 hours of driving pending traffic or how much we stopped for the boys. Everything was going great too. We had made it 6 and a half hours without stopping, which we were amazed the boys did so well. Of course the things we didnt expect were the 7 tropical thunderstorms satan sent himself, along with about 3 hours of traffic (not all at once - an hour and 20 mins here, an hour and 30 mins there) and of course no family car trip can be fully completed until one of your kids throws up in the car. Yea. Thanks Vinny. Gotta love that. The things is, he's not even sick. I think it was a mix of gulping down 1.5 juice boxes as fast as he could, plus too much milk earlier in the day (he's a little lactose intolerant) and possibly some car sickness added from trying to hold a dvd player and watch Diego. SO, after we stopped for 45 minutes to take EVERYTHING out of the car and clean it off, letting our kids just sit and play in the parking spot next to our car, we finally got back on the road, hit more traffic, and stopped about an hour from Boston. It's been a great start to our vacation. It can only get better from here (or can it?).

Today's agenda:

- Head to Wal-Mart for new car seat (current one is funkified and nasty)
- Maybe do shopping since we stopped in a cute little town
- Head to Boston once rush hour time is over
- Hit up Johnny Cupcakes and buy some fresh baked goods :-)
- Grab some lunch
- Drive another 3 hours to Vermont...hopefully with no traffic, and no puke

Enjoyed some time with the fam today. Took the kids strawberry picking! Man, i love fresh fruit. Ever since i was a kid. My parents tell me they used to hide the fruit on top of the fridge because i wouldn't stop eating it....but then i would just climb on top of the fridge. Thank God my kids didn't get my climbing genes. We didn't stay too long because i'm pretty sure i would have bought everything there! Plus we had to meet some family for a movie - Kung Fu Panda. As our kids grow older, one thing we (me and bren) love to do is single out one of our kids for a night. I think its good for our kids to have a special time where they get undivided attention and we can just pour on them. Usually one stays at my in-laws while we take the other out for some fun. Last night was one of those nights. We got to take Ashton to the "Celebrate Fairfax" Fair. We had a blast! I got to introduce Ashton to bumper cars and he loved it! Between the three of us we ate:

- Bloomin Onion
- Giant Turkey Leg
- Vanilla Ice Cream with Rainbow Sprinkles
- Vanilla/Chocolate Swirl Ice Cream with Peanut Butter
- Medium size bag of Kettle Corn (ok, we took this one home)
- Lemonade & refill
- Lime Fizz (my first one and it was amazing!)

- Cotton Candy (we took this home too)

One of my favorite Pastors who i try to keep up with as much as i can is Mark Batterson. He is the Pastor at National Community Church. A great speaker and writer. I keep up with his blog and he wrote something on his last post that i thought was great.

"I think we focus too much energy on church growth. I think it's all about personal growth. It's not about growing a big church. It's about growing big people--people who serve sacrificially, give generously, dream ridiculously, and love gracefully."

That's why small groups are so important. We need to reach and disciple people on a smaller and more personal level. Thats my goal for our church. Not that we would grow a church just to have a big church, but that each person would truly know God. To Fully Develop Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ for Local and Global Impact.

Mark Batterson has another book coming out soon and you should get it, cause i will.

A few weeks ago Kinetic Church in Charlotte, NC had a thief steal their trailer which contained 75% of their equipment. Pretty Sucky, but whats most interesting about the story and i think is pretty frickin cool is how the church is responding to the situation. well. we're back from our trip. It was short, but sweet. Had a lot of fun and ate A LOT. There aren't a lot of Sundays we get away for so we tried to make the best of this one. We ended up going to 2 different church's. Both were a lot of fun and doing great things for Christ on Long Island. One thing i was reminded of while we were there is how PASSIONATE the people are there. I love people from NY, probably because its where I'm from. Tomorrow my lovely wife and I will board a plane and head down to sunny Florida....childless. Oh, and i cant freakin wait. Granted its only for about 2 days, it is a much needed get away. One of my good friends is getting married and i couldnt be happier for him. Here are some thing i'm looking forward to...

.alone time with the most beautiful woman on the planet (my wife - duh!)
.not having to worry about the kids
.not having to worry about work
.relaxing, plain and simple
.an airplane ride without children
.a meal without children

Thats right folks, the Giants won the Super Bowl. I am still in awe and wondering how it happened. By far, one of the best football games i've ever seen. and i must admit seeing Tom Brady's upset face afterwards felt good. I'm sorry, i just really dont like the guy. I am however extremely happy for Eli. He totally deserved it and now he and big brother have back-to-back Super Bowl rings. How cool is that? It feels good to have your team win, real good. Especially when they win like last night. As for you Patriot fans out there, try not to feel too bad. Its not like they had a perfect season going.....o....wait.

i have an old 12" powerbook G4. i bought it the year i moved to VA. Ashton wasn't even born yet, so its pretty old. A while back the hard drive on it died and not having the $400 to send it to apple for them to fix it, i sat it on my shelf in hopes that some day i would be able to resurrect it. Well yesterday that hopeful wish came true. Ya see, a friend of mine has really been getting me into this DIY stuff. So, yesterday i finally sat down..tore apart my old mac and replaced the hard drive. The crazy thing is that it now actually works. Something i never thought i would ever see myself do. There's still some things to figure out...like how it won't connect to my network, but i have hopes ill get it working.

side note: who decided walking under a ladder was bad luck?

...the superbowl is tomorrow...oh yeah, and the Giants are in it.
